What are the guidelines for answering a question?

Here are some things to keep in mind when answering a question:

  1. Make sure to address exactly what the asker is asking about. Vague, partial answers won’t get upvotes. If you know what the asker needs, state it outright.

  2. It’s a good idea to post an example if an answer needs elaboration to explain. Write out an example, use an image or a snippet of code, or provide a link with some context if it’s relevant and helpful.

  3. You can indeed include links if they provide something beneficial to your answer. If it is just a spam link, it may be removed or your answer may not even go up on the site at all, so please avoid unnecessary links.

  4. You can cite sources if you think they are good for the asker to see, but it’s not necessary if your answer is based off your own experience and expertise.

  5. Avoid unnecessary commentary if you don’t know the answer. If you are having the same problem as the asker and want that known, you can upvote the question and it will have a positive impact on the post’s overall popularity and visibility.
