Uploading and Organizing Images in My Drive

In this guide we'll go over the ins and outs of using Bookmark's My Drive feature to store and organize your image files for your Bookmark website:

  • My Drive Overview

  • Adding Folders

  • Managing Folders

  • Uploading Image Files

  • Managing Images (favourites, renaming, deleting)

My Drive Overview:

My Drive is your storage area for all the images used in your Bookmark website. It is part of the website builder for all templates.

To open My Drive, click on it in the left sidebar of your template. You will see the images used in your template’s design already in the “Images” folder on My Drive.

In this example, we are looking at the Elenore Designs template:

In My Drive you can:

  • create new folders

  • upload your own images

  • add images from anywhere on the web

  • choose favorite images

  • edit images

  • rename images

  • delete images

You get 1 gigabyte of free storage space in My Drive. The maximum size of a file for upload to My Drive is 10 MB with a free account.

The Disk Usage Statistics in the lower left corner of My Drive shows you how much available storage space you have left.

If you upgrade to a Bookmark membership, you’ll get UNLIMITED storage space and maximum size of upload of 50 MB.

Adding Folders

If you are going to be uploading a lot of your own images onto your Bookmark website, you are probably going to want to create some new folders in My Drive. You must create the folder first, then upload the image files into the folder.

Adding a Folder Step 1: Open My Drive

In the website builder, open My Drive by clicking it in the left sidebar.

Adding a Folder Step 2: Exit the Images folder

You will notice that when you open My Drive, it defaults to the Images folder that contains your template’s pre-populated images. To make a new folder, you want to exit that folder, and return to your root drive. You do this by clicking the “Back” tab at the top left of the Images folder.

Adding a Folder Step 3: Click “New” button

Now you are at the root drive: All my files.  You will see the images folder, and any other folders you’ve made as thumbnails.

Click the button “New” in the left sidebar of My Drive.

When you click the New button, a drop-down menu will appear. Choose “Folder” from the drop-down menu:

Adding a Folder Step 4: Name your new folder

A pop-up box will appear, asking you to name your new folder. Type your folder’s name into the textbox, and click OK.

For this example, we typed in the new folder name, “Design Projects” and then clicked OK.

Adding a Folder Step 5: Your folder is created

Your new folder name now appears in the left sidebar, and the folder appears in the All my files window.

To open your new folder so that you can start adding files to it, just click it in the left sidebar, or double-click the folder in the All my files window.

Managing your Folders

You can rename or delete a folder you’ve added in My Drive. Note: you must be at the root drive (All my files) in order to rename or delete a folder. To get to the root drive, click the “Back” tab of whatever folder you’re on.

Renaming a Folder

To rename your folder, exit the folder so that you are in the root drive (All my Files) by clicking the Back tab in the top left of the My Drive window. Once you do that, you will see your folder thumbnail in the My Drive window.

Under the folder symbol, you will see your folder’s name and some icons.

To Rename your folder: Click the pen icon

When you click this icon, your folder’s name will become unlocked so that you can edit it.

When you are finished, click the checkmark. (To cancel the change, click the X.)

The folder now has its new name, in this example, “Background Images”.

Deleting a Folder

To delete your folder, exit the folder so that you are in the root drive (All my Files) by clicking the Back tab in the top left of the My Drive window. Once you do that, you will see your folder thumbnail in the My Drive window

Under the folder symbol, you will see your folder’s name and some icons.

To delete your folder: click the trash can symbol.

When you click this icon, you’ll see a message asking you to confirm deletion where the folder name used to be:

To delete the folder, click the checkmark. (To cancel, and keep the folder, click the X.)

Your folder will be deleted, and no longer appears in the left sidebar or the All my files window.

Uploading Image Files

Now that you have your new folders, you can add images to them.

Uploading Images Step 1: Choose the folder you want to add the image to.

You will notice that when you open My Drive, it defaults to the Images folder that contains your template’s pre-populated images. You can add images to that folder. If you’ve made other folders, and you wish to add your image file to one of these, click the folder name in the left side-bar to select it.

For this example, we are going to add the new image file to the folder: Design Projects. After clicking Design Projects in the left menu, we now see our empty folder open:

Uploading Images Step 2: Click “New” button

Click the button “New” in the left sidebar of My Drive.

When you click the New button, a drop-down menu will appear. Choose “File” from the drop-down menu:

Uploading Images Step 3: Select the source for your image file

You can upload a file from your computer, or you can provide the image URL for an image from elsewhere on the internet.

My Drive will default to your computer as the file source. If your file source is an image URL, click the Image URL tab at the top of the My Drive window to switch tabs.

Uploading Images Step 4: Add your image
Follow the instructions to add your image:

Adding from your computer: either drag the photos from another window into the My Drive window, or click the Upload Photos from your computer button to open a dialog box to select photos from your computer. (see image in Step 3 above)

Adding image URL: (see image below) paste the image URL into the text box, and click the ADD button. You have the option of naming the image using the text box at the bottom right of My Drive.

Viewing your Image

Your image file will now appear in the folder in thumbnail view:

Managing images (favorites, renaming and deleting)

Favorite Images

You might have noticed a Favorites title in the left sidebar of My Drive:

You can designate any image in My Drive as a favorite by clicking the star icon in the top right corner of the image thumbnail.

Before clicking:

After clicking, the star will turn yellow to indicate it is a favorite image:

A copy of the image will now appear in the Favorites folder. To open the Favorites, just click it on the left sidebar.

To remove the image from your Favorites, just click the star again to turn it white. It will disappear from Favorites, but the original image file will still exist in its original folder.

A note on deleting: don’t confuse deleting an image with removing it from your favorites!

Renaming an Image File:

To rename an image, click the icon that looks like a pen below the image you want to rename.

A close-up view:

When you click this icon, your image’s name will become unlocked so that you can edit it.

When you are finished, click the checkmark. (To cancel the change, click the X.)

Your image now has its new name.

Deleting an Image File:

To delete an image, click the icon that looks like a trash can below the image you want to rename.

A close-up view:

When you click this icon, you’ll see a message asking you to confirm deletion where the file name used to be:

To delete the image file, click the checkmark. (To cancel, and keep the image file, click the X.)

Your image will be deleted, and no longer appears in your folder.

Moving Images to another Folder

At this time, we do not have the feature to move images between folders on My Drive. If you want to change the folder an image is in, you will have to upload it to the new folder location and delete it from the old folder. We have tabled this feature for a future upgrade on Bookmark.com.
