Let’s start by understanding what a sitemap actually is.
According to Google, a sitemap is a file where you can list the web pages of your site to tell Google and other search engines about the organization of your site content. Search engine web crawlers like Googlebot read this file to more intelligently crawl your site.
Luckily, you do not need to worry about creating this yourself. Bookmark automatically generates a sitemap.xml file for you that contains links to all of your website’s pages and content.
So all you need to know is where to find your sitemap, how to verify your site, and then how to submit your sitemap to Google.
Finding your sitemap is easy.
Step 1: Settings
Click Settings in the left menu bar.
Step 2: SEO
Click SEO in the left menu bar.
Step 3: Find Your Website Sitemap
Scroll down the page to find the Website Sitemap section. From here you can copy and paste your sitemap address.
Before you submit your sitemap, you need to verify your site with Google.
Step 1: Go to Google Search Console
Log-in with your google email address and you will automatically be directed to the welcome screen.
Step 2: Add a Property
Enter your url, or website address, and click the red add a property button.
Step 3: Get Your Meta Tag
Click the alternate methods tab to choose the HTML tag option. Then copy the meta tag.
Step 4: Paste Your Meta Tag
Go back to your Bookmark website editor to paste the Google meta tag into the Header Code section of the SEO editing page. Remember, to get to this section click Settings and then SEO in the Left Menu Bar.
Step 5: Save
Save these changes to your site by clicking Save Settings, then Save and Publish in the left menu bar.
Step 6: Verify Your Site
Go back to your Google Search Console and click the red verify button at the bottom of the page.
You will then automatically be redirected to a page that confirms your verification success.
Almost done! A few quick steps to complete the process and you will have your sitemap submitted. This will ensure that your site can be crawled and indexed by Google with ease.
Step 1: Add/Test Your Sitemap
Go to the sitemaps section of your Google Search Console
Click the red add/test sitemap button
Type sitemap.xml beside your url that will automatically appear to the left
Click the blue submit button
Step 2: Confirm Your Submission
You will now see that your sitemap is submitted and pending. This will automatically update when the process is complete.
In the image below you will see only 1 webpage submitted because our example is a single-page website. If you have a multiple-page website, the # of webpages will change accordingly.
