How to add SEO information to your website

Bookmark offers two types of SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. These are: Site-wide SEO and Advanced Pages SEO. Site-wide SEO is a free feature, whereas Advanced, Page-specific SEO is for members who have upgraded to Pro membership.

Site-wide SEO settings:

Here’s how you can apply general, site-wide SEO settings to your Bookmark website:

Step 1: Open your website by clicking the Edit button in the tab: Your Website.

Step 2: Choose the Settings Option in the left sidebar menu:

Step 3: Choose the SEO option from the Settings menu:

When you click the SEO option in the Settings menu, the Settings / SEO page will open.

Step 4: Fill in the SEO information

Let’s take a look at the various SEO settings available on the Settings / SEO page:

Site Name Structure:

The first setting refers to the way your website’s page names are displayed in your viewer's’ browser tabs, and in search engine results lists.

There are two choices: Menu Name first, then Site name, or the opposite way around. Click the drop-down arrow to choose your preferred option.

Menu Name refers to the name of the page as determined in the navigation menu on your website.

For example, If your website is www.downtowndentistry.bookmark.com, you would probably set up your Site name as Downtown Dentistry. If your site has a Contact Us page, that’s an example of a menu Name.

If you choose the Menu Name - Site Name option, a visitor on the Contact Us page of your website, will see in their browser tab

Contact Us - Downtown Dentistry

If you choose Site Name - Menu name, then they will see

Downtown Dentistry - Contact Us

Site Name:

Here is where you set up the site name that your website will be known as in search engines and which will displayed in the browser tabs in the Site Name Structure discussed above.

Below we have filled in “Downtown Dentistry” for the Site Name.

Site Description:

It is important to give some careful thought to what you put in your Site Description. This is what people see when your site is listed in search engine results. It should be short - one or two sentences - and give the reader the main purpose of your website at a glance.

For example, below is the site description for Wikipedia, when it turns up in a Google search result:

Meta Keywords:

The next section is where you can enter the keywords that you want your website to be associated with in search engines. For example, if someone searches for Dentist, you would want your Downtown Dentistry website to be in the search results they see.

Put a comma and space between each keyword. For example, Dentistry, Dentist

Footer Code and Header Code:

These areas are where you can paste in any HTML code snippets for tracking analytics.

Hide Website from search engines:

You can hide, or block your website from being indexed by search engines. This means that your website will not will be listed in any search results on Google or other search engines.

This does not mean that your website is completely hidden from viewers. If you’ve published your website, it exists on the internet, and can be viewed. For example, if someone types your website’s URL into their browser, your website will appear.

To hide your website from search engines, change the setting to ON in the drop-down menu:

Step 5: Save Settings

Be sure to click the Save Settings button at the bottom of the Settings / SEO page to save your SEO settings.

Advanced Pages SEO:

To add search engine data to individual pages of your Bookmark website, open your website in Bookmark’s website builder, and follow these steps:

Step 1: Open the Pages tab

In the left sidebar of the website builder click the Pages tab to open it.

Now you will see the current navigation tree for your website in the left sidebar. For example:

Step 2: Select the page you wish to add search engine data to, and click the pen icon

In the Pages sidebar, click on the page you want to add search engine data to to select it. For our example, we are clicking the Team page.

When the Team page is selected, it is highlighted, and the edit and delete icons appear to its left:

Step 3: Click the Advanced settings button

When you click the pen icon, the Edit Page Settings page for the Team page will appear. Click on Advanced Settings.

Step 4: Enter and Save the Search engine data

Clicking the Advanced Settings button opens more settings in the Edit Page Settings window:

  • Page Title

  • Page Description

  • Page Keywords

  • Footer Code

  • Header Code

  • Password Protect Page

  • Delete Page

  • Hide Page from Search Engines

The first few settings mirror those described above for site-wide SEO settings, with the difference being that now these settings are specific to the particular page of your website. These settings are described in more detail above.

Page Title is what will appear in the browser tab when a user is visiting that page of your website, and is also used in search engines.

Page Description is a brief paragraph you can write, and load up with search engine keywords, to describe your page for search engine optimization.

Page Keywords are terms that you want your web-page to rank highly for in search engines.

Footer Code and Header Code is where you can add HTML code snippets for tracking analytics on your page.

Password Protect Page:

This setting allows you to put password protection on a specific page of your website. When you use this setting, visitors to your website will not be able to access the page unless they know the username and password.

Delete Page:

Caution! Pressing this button deletes the page from your website.

Hide page from Search Engines:

You can hide a specific page of your website from being indexed by search engines. This means that your web page will not will be listed in any search results on Google or other search engines. This does not mean that your web-page is hidden from viewers.

To hide your webpage from search engines, change the setting to ON in the drop-down menu:

Step 5: Save Settings

When you are finished entering all of this information, click the Save Settings button at the bottom of the Edit Page Settings window.
